NEW! Version 4 Fully Assembled OD-308s Now Available!

Version 4 Now Shipping — I have been listening to your requests. Many wanted more Bass and less of a midhump with more dynamics and Version 4 delivers all three.

So, exactly what is an OD-308? It is an Overdrive/Distortion that possesses all the qualities I’ve always wanted in an Overdrive/Distortion. It’s based on a RAT2 circuit but with lots of changes. I’ve taken all the great qualities of the RAT (smooth FAT Cutting Gain with Rich Harmonics) and enhanced them. And I removed all the things I didn’t like (fuzziness, mushy and bassy gain when distortion knob is maxxed, unfocused gain structure).

The OD-308 is really three pedals in one. The 3-way toggle switch gives you 3 very different options. FAT Mode — triggers an LED for a FAT, Smooth, Harmonically Rich Gain. FINE Mode — triggers two 4002 Diodes for a Super Rich, FAT and Smooth Gain that is unbelievable for Pinched Harmonics. BOOST Mode — the middle position of the toggle switch, is perfect for creating a Silky Smooth Clean Boost. BOOST Mode is also great for crunch and that Famous “Marshall Brown Sound”.

This is, by far, the best OD/Distortion pedal I have ever played. It is “The Sound” I’ve always heard in my head but was unable to achieve until now! If you’re unhappy with your tone or maybe you are happy and just want another great OD Pedal to add to your arsenal, the OD-308 is definitely for You!
Black Label OD-308s - The current waiting list is 4 to 8 weeks. Full payment is required up front. Depending on my work load more time may be required. If you've been holding off ordering I would recommend you order now. I expect Version 4 to be in big demand.

OD-308 Shipping - All OD-308s ship Priority Mail to the USA and First Class Regular Post to Canada and Internationally. I may offer other shipping options at a later time but at the moment this is how all OD-308s will ship.

WARNING! - I will not be held responsible if your Paypal account lists an incorrect address on your Paypal account. Please check your Paypal address before you place an order with me.

DISCLAIMER - Absolutely no refunds. All sales are final. We cannot be held responsible if you ruin your pedal. I just got ripped off by a buyer of my TR-2 mod. Said he wasn't happy with the mod so I offered to buy the TR-2 from him. I gave him $110 in good faith. When I received the pedal it was non-functioning. He had drilled the hole for the pot in the wrong place piercing the ribbon going to the depth pot and completely pulled 4 traces from the PCB. And he wanted to know why the mod sounded bad. Because of this I will no longer issue refunds of any type on mods. If you do not have the skills required to perform the mod then please let us do the mod for you. Monte Allums

OD-308 TESTIMONIALS

Monte, I received the OD-308 last night, and I'm very happy with it. This thing is awesome! I've tried a lot of different pedals in the years that I've been playing, and this thing is sweet. Definitely one of my favorites. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to getting some mods from you soon. Thanks Monte! Steve Calabria, Elk Grove Village Illinois

This is a DIY kit and it IS the sweetest overdrive I have ever heard, the Monte Allums OD-308. Robert Ransley Zell, Spain

Hi, It's Nick Dallas Sydney Australia. I got my OD-308 today and have finished assembling it. It worked straight away. It sounds excellent and it keeps the natural tone of my 1979 Strat intact, which no other OD I have played through has done. Thank you, a sign of a good guitar pedal technician. My only guitar has a beautiful natural sound.
Nick Dallas, Sydney, Australia

j just completed the OD-308. I connected it to my Strat and wow!!!!!! What an incredible holy grail distortion. How did you do this man? It is unbelievable what a big wall of sound. Fulltone, Boss and line6 are definitely beaten by your talent to design high quality guitar stomp pedals. I have an OCD of Fulltone and a Boss DS-1 mod but those pedals are for sale now! Because of the OD-308!! Ruud Wagenaar, Netherlandsy

I just finished the OD 308- kit and wanted to let you know that it is an absolute beautiful sounding pedal, a piece of gear you must have. I had so much fun to build it, imagine the smile on the face of a boy with a new toy. Thank you so much, Romano Burini, Osimo, Italy

Monte, Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how much I'm enjoying my new OD-308! It's bumped the Crowther Hotcake off my board and that's hard to do! I really like the fine mode, very harmonic and stacks great with my Allums Tri-Gain modded DS-1. The other modes are equally great. I'm a tech guy and tweak things a lot in my quest for tone so I notice some things that others might not notice. I really like the way you made the power supply cap a 220uf. It really helps reproduce the bass notes which require a good reserve of "juice.", Well done! Michael Dombrowski, East Aurora, NY

Hey Monte, I've now used the OD-308 at two rehearsals, with great results. At the risk of sounding a bit too enamored with the OD-308, I was playing in FAT mode at louder volumes last night and suddenly thought, "Wait a second, where have I heard that tone before?" Turns out the tone I was thinking of came from a cranked boutique Bad Cat head/4x12 cabinet I auditioned in a local music store recently. It sounded amazing, and I thought "Well, I guess that's the kind of tone you get when you drop $7,500 on an amp." Since I can't afford that kind of investment, I resigned myself to settling for much less. Until last night, that is. Somehow (to my ears, at least) the OD-308 produced just as exciting and rich a tone through my more budget-conscious set-up: CS-3 w/ Opto Plus mod -> Digitech Bad Monkey -> OD-308 -> Line6 Pod X3 -> 18W Atomic Amp. Amazing. I love how the Bad Monkey stacks with the OD-308, too. You rock, man! Keep up the great work! Jeff Watt, Canada

Dear Monte, Just to say that I got the OD-308 assembled. I love this pedal! Thanks for everything. Basil Dales, United Kingdom

Just finished my OD-308. Thanks for making it so easy. I used my multimeter and took my time and it works great. Sweet sounding pedal. It has very wide range of sounds. I am looking forward to using it on stage. Thanks again! Scottie Cable, Dawson, PA

Hey Monte, all I can say is WOW!! What an amazing pedal! Shipping was fast and the instructions were super clear. I took my time putting it together, triple checking everything before soldering and it worked perfectly right off the bat! I play your pedal with a Fender Telecaster and a Fender Esquire through a Fender 65 re-issue Twin Reverb. Super sweet in all settings! From boosted twang to blues to good 'ol rock 'n roll! You aren't kidding when you say “sustain for days”! I can dial in any sound I'm looking for. My guitar jamming buddies are ecstatic about your pedal and you can expect a few more orders from north of the border! Thanks, Monte and keep up the amazing work! Kevin Coleman, British Columbia, Canada

Hi Monte, I finished making your OD-308 yesterday. I just want to say that the tonality of it is brilliant. The EQ control gives my Telecaster a nice overdrivey warm tone & I can tell there's plenty of space for a Les Paul. For example, to brighten up - well done! Darren Hampton, United Kingdom

Fabulous work on this overdrive Monte. This pedal could not sound anymore rich, the distortion is amazing. It sounds better than anything I've ever played through before. I'm ditching my modded Monte Allums Rat2 for this thing. Jake Nonweiler, Tulsa, OK

I just built my OD-308 (box painted Sea Foam Green) and I can't crank it up because it's late and my girlfriend is asleep. But I can already tell that I'm going to love it. Wow! Thanks Monte, Josh Bradshaw
Pekin, IL

Hi! I just did the the pedal today and... WOW! Just love it! great tone and the instructions were very clear.

Hi Monte, Got the pedal yesterday. It came fast! Built it up today and it's an incredible pedal. The sound is what I've always dreamed. No noises even when increasing Overdrive and volume. GREAT! Thanks for creating it. Patrick Lepleux, France

Hi Monte, I'm just writing to let you know how great I think the OD-308 is. My father built it and gave it to me for Christmas and ever since it's been my go-to gain box. I'm an audio engineer (for film) in NYC, play in a couple bands, and even do a fair amount of musical-electronics tinkering (I introduced my Dad to modding amps, he's introduced me to modding pedals). I've also got a decent selection of overdrive pedals and I feel like I've played yours enough to confidently say that it has not only officially kicked my vintage Rat off my board, but also that it's the only distortion pedal I carry with me to rehearsals anymore (sorry Fulldrive, pedal boards and subways don't mix). Its clarity, note definition, and ability to control gain with the guitar's volume are extremely musical. Earlier this week I even ordered your Opto Plus mod for the CS3 and am really looking forward to giving it a go. Anyway, thanks a lot for an awesome pedal. Ryan Hullings, Brooklyn, NY

I just recently installed the buffer circuit in my 308 with great results. It can be a little tricky to get the buffer board installed to the switch cause you've already heated the switch once to get the original larger wires installed. Now you have to heat it again to remove those wires then, heat it again to solder the board to the switch. I have to admit I was a little worried that something would happen to the switch but I took my time de-soldering the wires from one or two terminals as quickly as I could then let it sit and cool for a bit before moving on to a couple more. After getting the wires removed I used solder braid to clean the terminals as well. It all went well for me and I had no problems at all. Just take your time and make sure you clean the iron and tin it a bit with some fresh solder just before applying the iron to remove the wires. I have to say that the 308 with the buffer circuit is my pedal of choice now and I have quite a few OD/Distortion pedals. Tony Leach, Syracuse, OH

Now that I have had a few shows and a couple rehearsals with this new pedal, I feel I am qualified to give full opinion on this pedal beyond, "sounds great - in my home studio"! Let me start with: This is definitely the nicest OD/distortion pedal I have ever played. It not only sounds great but it cuts in a mix (very important to me) and it inspires me every time I kick it in! Even our drummer came over after our first gig with this pedal and said "what have you added to this board now that sounds so good? WOW - This pedal does not disappoint! Everything Monte has claimed about this pedal is deadly accurate. It is responsive, has incredible note clarity and oozes with tone. Although I play many styles of music, my main gig is in a country/rock group. With that said, I find this pedal has more than enough gain. In that gig I tend to set the pedal to "boost" and run the gain around "noon". This seems to provide a great 70's rock sound, similar to Van Halen's earlier "brown sound" (which doesn't' have near as much gain as you may think). When I am practicing in my home studio on some Satch, Vai or Santana music, I set the pedal in FAT mode and don't have to crank the gain past 1 or 2 o'clock to get enough. I don't run high gain pickups - these are generally standard fender, or PAF humbuckers with between 6k-8k of resistance. WOW..." Keep up the great work Monte - I'm a believer! Sean Borton, Winnipeg MB, Canada

Hi Monte, I am really impressed with the OD-308 for three reasons, there's no muddiness at the bottom end, it gives a wide range of sounds and it's response to the guitar volume is brilliant. Many thanks for all your hard work and research. Basil Dales, United Kingdom

Hi Monte! A Happy & Prosperous New Year to you. What does the 308 sound like? Nothing short of jaw-droppingly amazing. I never thought I would replace my mid 80's Rat but your Overdrive wins by a quite a margin. I love the FAT sounds which are very Rat-like but with more warmth, presence and body. Through the Lab Series L7 it sounded very impressive indeed but through the Hiwatt.....Wow! I have never heard crunch quite like that before. Even if the 308 only had this option it would have replaced the Rat on my pedalboard. I doubt I will use the BOOST mode as I have the SD-808 to cover that area. But the FINE mode is something else. Fullness with dirt and clarity. However did you manage to achieve what seems like a contradiction? I am torn between the FAT and FINE options but now understand why you have two OD-308s on your board. This is a seriously good pedal. Both the FAT and FINE modes have a wide range of usable and very musical sounds. Of course I still have to explore it further... Whilst I really enjoyed the pedal building process the final product is what this is all about. The OD-308 on its own is a very impressive kit, but with your CS-3 mod, BD-H2O Plus and SD-808 capable of driving it, the sonic options are enormous. I really cannot rate this pedal too highly. It makes me want to play. Monte, your pedal mods are brilliant but your 308 is superlative. Strat, P90s or humbuckers it delivers better than any other distortion/overdrive I have tried. Can't see anything coming close — and at an almost ridiculously low price to boot. Many, many thanks for developing this remarkable overdrive. Richard Underwood, United Kingdom

Hello! Just wanted to let everyone know that I just finished the OD-308 with no problems and it sounds great! Once I master how to set the controls it will sound even better, but playing at a gig it sounded quite good! My guitar has never sounded so fat before! It has wonderful sustain and is also great for soloing. I had some people, who knew I had just finished this pedal (and also don't know anything about music), come up to me and said even they could tell a tonal difference! With three different switch settings, the versatility of the pedal is great too. Once I start using the pedal more I am sure it will continue surprising me. Thanks to all who were involved in the development of this pedal, it is greatly appreciated. I look forward to others! Nick Rosales, Huntington Beach, CA

I put together the OD-308 kit last night and it was a lot of fun to build. The instructions were clear and the process went pretty fast. Now to test it out. I have a Victoria 45410 which is a fairly expensive hand wired Fender Bassman Clone. It's a very nice amp, but I could never get it to sound as good as I wanted. However, as soon as I hooked up the OD-308, the thing sounded amazing. I now a have a very responsive, rich, beautiful sounding amp. This is the tone I've been looking for. I really think the OD-308 is something special — nice work Monte! Jack Donaldson, Los Angeles, CA

Hi, built the pedal over a couple of evenings and finished last night. I've done a couple of mods in the past but that's about it. Even so, the kit and the instructions made sure the build was pretty straightforward. Luckily it worked first time. But then I did take my time with the build, and as others have said, triple checked everything before soldering. I guess it paid off. I am fortunate to own a few boutique and vintage pedals and so far this new addition is certainly holding it's own. It's gonna take a bit more tweaking to find the perfect settings for my overall set-up, but it's already on a very short list of my fav' OD pedals. And far more satisfying to have built it myself rather than to have just bought it. Monte - Thanks for a quality kit and a nice pedal. Oakley Martin, Hong Kong

Fabulous work on this overdrive Monte. This pedal could not sound anymore rich, the distortion is amazing. It sounds better than anything I've ever played through before. I'm ditching my modded Monte Allums Rat 2 for this thing. Jake Nonweiler, Tulsa, OK

I just built mine (box painted Sea Foam Green) and I can't crank it up because it's late and my girlfriend is asleep. But I can already tell that I'm going to love it. The OD-308 doesn't get splatty at low volumes like other pedals do. I'm really loving the tones from this thing. I've already had two guitarists ask to "borrow" it. I'd never see it again! A+++ Monte, Josh Bradshaw, Pekin, IL

Hi, was having lunch today and the door buzzer went. Australia Post here! Delivery from the States, It took me a solid 2 hours to put this box together. The instructions were very clear and detailed. Plug it into my DRRI with my Strat and boy this box is a winner. It's a rich and warm sounding OD box. Beats the MI Blues Pro I was about to get. Tried my ES 339 and boy! The humbuckers really drive this thing crazy. Will be trying out different settings and will post later. Thank Monte for a great product! Heading down to the hardware store to find a nice paint job for it. Dennis Goh, Adelaide, South Australia

About the VideoIn the above video I am running a stereo setup. Here's the signal path. Strat > Opto Plus Modded CS-3 > OD-308 > Line 6 DL4 > Stereo out of the DL4 into a 1975 Fender Super Reverb and a 2001 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I used the built-in stereo mic of my digital camera.

Tonemeister Sean Borton & His OD-308

Sean_Borton_OD308.mp3

Here's Sean describing how he recorded this clipThis entire recording was done with this setup. The acoustic is a 1948 Gibson J-45 double tracked left/right. Stratocaster loaded with EMG SA (Vintage) pickups. The amp is actually a Line 6 Pod (version 2 upgrade) set to British Class A, which is similar to a Vox AC 30. This setting was kept very clean – without any overdrive introduced. Boss CS3 compressor with Opto Plus mod (Level: One o'clock, Tone: 11 o'clock, Attack 2 o'clock, Sustain 10 o'clock).

OD-308: (Boost Mode) OD: (12 o'clock noon) EQ: (3 o'clock) Volume: (11 o'clock, matches output when bypassed). Boss DD3 (with Monte Allums) High Cut mod. I generally use the most severe high cut on this pedal which continually rolls off the highs on each repeat. I love the "tape echo" feel this gives to this pedal! The lead guitar was recorded 100% with this setup.

All overdrive is the OD-308 and the level of overdrive is controlled by the volume control of the guitar. Only the bridge pickup was used on this track. There is also a drone guitar track heard in parts of this song. This part is very clean and is the same setup – with the OD-308 turned off and the guitar set to the bridge/middle position. This shows how clean the guitar sound was without the OD-308 introduced.

I just recorded this today (9-6-2008). There are two mp3s. One is recorded with delay and reverb and the other is totally effect free. Take notice of just how Dynamic this pedal is. I am using the guitar volume to control the amount of overdrive. This has got to be the most natural and Dynamic overdrive I have personally ever played. Totally natural sounding breakup. I used the FAT mode (LED) side of the Tri-Gain switch on this mp3. I will be posting more mp3s later.

Guitar used is a Fender Strat with DiMarzio PAF Pro at the bridge and DiMarzio Virtual Vintage at the middle and neck. I used a SM57 on a 2001 Fender Hot Rod Deluxe set on a clean setting.

just recorded this today (9-13-2008). There are two mp3s. One is recorded with delay and reverb and the other is totally effect free. I used the Boost mode (Center) side of the Tri-Gain switch on this mp3. The gain on this mp3 was at about 10'clock. This is one of my personal favorite settings on the OD-308. On this mode there's a very smooth saturation that drips with smooth FAT clean tones. Just dial the gain up a bit and the OD-308 will mimic a tube amp right on the verge of tube saturation. A Blues and Jazz player delight! I will be posting more mp3s later.
